Gravity (2013) Known Trivia

  • The film's space debris cascade is a very real possibility. Gravity 2013 This scenario is known as the Kessler syndrome, named after NASA scientist Donald J. Gravity 2013 Kessler who first proposed the theory in 1978. Gravity 2013 A cascading Kessler syndrome involving an object the size of the International Space Station would trigger a catastrophic debris chain-reaction. Gravity 2013 The orbiting debris field would make it impossible to launch space exploration missions or satellites for many decades. Gravity 2013 139 of 142 found this interesting Interesting? • Sandra Bullock spent six months in physical training to prepare for shooting while reviewing the script with Cuarón in meticulous detail. Gravity 2013 Cuarón said, "More than anything else, we were just talking about the thematic element of the film, the possibility of rebirth after adversity." They worked out how she would perform each scene, and her notes were included the pre-vis animation and programming for the robots. Gravity 2013 Cuarón and Bullock zeroed in on one crucial aspect of the performance: Stone's breath, "and how that breath was going to dictate her emotions," he said. Gravity 2013 "That breath that is connected with stress in some instances, but also the breath that is dictated by lack of oxygen." Their conversations covered every detail of the script and Bullock's character. Gravity 2013 "She was involved so closely in every single decision throughout the whole thing," Cuarón said. Gravity 2013 "And it was a good thing, because once we started prepping for the shoot, it was almost more like a dance routine, where it was one-two-three left, left, four-five-six then on the right. Gravity 2013 She was amazing about the blocking and the rehearsal of that. Gravity 2013 So when we were shooting, everything was just about truthfulness and emotion." James Cameron, best friend of Cuarón and a huge fan of the film, said Bullock's work is more impressive than the technology that supported it. Gravity 2013 "She's the one that had to take on this unbelievable challenge to perform it. Gravity 2013 (It was) probably no less demanding than a Cirque du Soleil performer, from what I can see." And of the result, he said, "There's an art to that, to creating moments that seem spontaneous but are very highly rehearsed and choreographed. Gravity 2013 Not too many people can do it. Gravity 2013 ... Gravity 2013 I think it's really important for people in Hollywood to understand what was accomplished here." 172 of 177 found this interesting Interesting? YesNo |
  • Alfonso Cuarón, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, and visual effects supervisor Tim Webber decided that they couldn't make Gravity as they wanted to by simply using traditional methods. Gravity 2013 So for the spacewalk scenes, says Webber, "We decided to shoot (the actors') faces and create everything else digitally. Gravity 2013 Which was quite a difficult decision." To do that, Lubezki reasoned, he would need to light the faces to match the all-digital environment they'd be put into. Gravity 2013 Whether the characters were floating gently, changing direction or tumbling in space, the facial light would have to be a perfect match for the Earth, sun and stars in the background. Gravity 2013 "That can break easily," explains Lubezki, "if the light is not moving at the speed that it has to move, if the position of the light is not right, if the contrast or density on the faces is wrong, et cetera." Lubezki suggested folding an LED screen into a box, putting the actor inside, and using the light from the screen to light the actor. Gravity 2013 That way, instead of moving either Bullock or Clooney in the middle of static lights, the projected image could move while they stayed still and safe. Gravity 2013 This "light box" became the key to the spacewalk scenes. Gravity 2013 But it was only a nine-foot cube, just big enough for one actor, not an actor and a camera crew. • Aningaaq, the man Dr. Gravity 2013 Stone talks to on the shortwave radio, is the main character of the short film 'Aningaaq' directed by Jonás Cuarón. Gravity 2013 In that movie he is an Inuit fisherman camping on the ice over a frozen fjord. Gravity 2013 He has a daughter and a dog sled, both of which make an 'appearence' in Gravity via the radio. Gravity 2013 31 of 31 found this interesting Interesting? YesNo |
  • Gravity had languished in development hell for four years, because the film's ambition - in terms of the cinematography, visual effects, and realistic "story atmosphere" of outer space - proved to be too challenging and Cuarón had to wait for the technology to be far more advanced and progressed to meet his vision; that was finally realized in 2009 with James Cameron's Avatar. Gravity 2013 64 of 68 found this interesting Interesting? YesNo |
  • The length of the film is 90 minutes. Gravity 2013 It just so happens that the ISS travels at approximately 17,500 mph which takes it around the Earth in 90 minutes. Gravity 2013 In the course of the movie, the station makes one complete orbit in real life. Gravity 2013 59 of 63 found this interesting Interesting? YesNo |
  • The real-life Chinese Space station is named Tiangong ("Heavenly Palace") and, at the time of the film's premiere, it consists of only one small inhabitable module. Gravity 2013 The goal of the Tiangong program is the construction of a space station much like the one in the film by the year 2022. Gravity 2013 34 of 36 found this interesting Interesting? YesNo |
  • Though the film itself is scientifically accurate in depicting no sound in space, sound effects were added to the film's trailers to make them appear more exciting. Gravity 2013 63 of 70 found this interesting Interesting? YesNo |
  • The off-screen voice of Mission Control is Ed Harris, who played real-life mission director Gene Kranz in Apollo 13. Gravity 2013 19 of 20 found this interesting Interesting? YesNo |
  • Because of Alfonso Cuarón's love of lengthy takes, Sandra Bullock often had to memorize long combinations of precise movements to hit her marks at different points in the shot. Gravity 2013 And she often had to coordinate her own moves with those of the wire rig attached to her and the camera. Gravity 2013 30 of 34 found this interesting Interesting? YesNo |

Goofs: Factual errors: Early in the film, Matt Kowalski states that to get back to Earth you would point down and fly forward. Gravity 2013 In actuality, you would point in the opposite direction to your motion and fly forward (called retrograde), since an orbit is constantly falling back to earth but missing it all the time. Gravity 2013 An astronaut would know better.

Gravity (2013) Plot: A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space. Gravity 2013 Full summary »  »

Gravity (2013) Story: Dr. Gravity 2013 Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. Gravity 2013 But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. Gravity 2013 The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone - tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. Gravity 2013 Written byMuTaTeD

{tab=Synopsis}

Gravity (2013) Synopsis: In an alternate 2014/2015, bio-medical engineer Dr. Gravity 2013 Ryan Stone is a Mission Specialist on her first space shuttle mission, STS-157, accompanied by veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski, who is commanding his final expedition. Gravity 2013 During the final spacewalk to service the Hubble Space Telescope, Mission Control in Houston warns the team that debris from a Russian missile strike on a defunct satellite has caused a chain reaction of destruction and that they must abort the mission. Gravity 2013 Shortly afterward, communications from Mission Control are lost, though Stone and Kowalski continue to transmit in hopes that the ground crew can hear them.

High-speed debris kills engineer Shariff and damages the space shuttle Explorer, sending Stone far away from it. Gravity 2013 Kowalski, who is wearing a thruster pack, navigates to Stone and retrieves her. Gravity 2013 Tethered together, the two make their way back to Explorer, where they discover it has been damaged far beyond usability, and the rest of the crew are dead from exposure. Gravity 2013 They decide to use the thruster pack to make their way to the International Space Station (ISS), which is in orbit only about 100 km (60 mi) away. Gravity 2013 Kowalski estimates they have 90 minutes before the debris field completes an orbit and threatens them again.During the route to the ISS, the two discuss Stone's life back home and the death of her young daughter in a schoolyard accident. Gravity 2013 As they approach the slightly damaged ISS, they see that its crew has evacuated in one of the Soyuz modules and that the other's parachute has been accidentally deployed, making it useless for return to Earth. Gravity 2013 But Kowalski says that the Soyuz designated TMA-14M can still be used to travel to the nearby Chinese space station Tiangong to retrieve another module that can take them to Earth. Gravity 2013 Out of air and maneuvering power, the two try to grab onto the ISS as they fly by. Gravity 2013 At the last moment, Stone's leg becomes entangled in the Soyuz's parachute cords, but Kowalski realizes that his momentum will carry them both away; over Stone's protests, he detaches himself from the tether so that Stone might survive, and the tension in the cords pulls her back towards the ISS. Gravity 2013 As Kowalski floats away, he radios additional instructions and encouragement to Stone.

Stone enters the ISS via an airlock but must hastily make her way to the Soyuz to escape a fire. Gravity 2013 Stone realizes the Soyuz's parachute cables are still tangled with the ISS. Gravity 2013 She spacewalks outside to release the cables, barely succeeding just as the debris field completes its orbit and destroys the station. Gravity 2013 Stone aligns the Soyuz with Tiangong, but discovers the craft's thrusters have no fuel. Gravity 2013 Stone resigns herself to being stranded and begins decompression of the cabin to commit suicide by painless hypoxia. Gravity 2013 As she begins to lose consciousness, Kowalski appears outside, enters the capsule, and tells her to use the Soyuz's landing rockets. Gravity 2013 Kowalski's appearance is revealed as a hallucination. Gravity 2013 Newly motivated to live, Stone restores the flow of oxygen and uses the rockets to navigate towards Tiangong.Unable to dock the Soyuz with the station, Stone ejects herself via explosive decompression and uses a fire extinguisher as a makeshift thruster to travel to Tiangong. Gravity 2013 She enters the Shenzhou capsule just as Tiangong starts to break up on the upper edge of the atmosphere, having been knocked from orbit by debris. Gravity 2013 As the capsule descends to Earth, Stone hears Mission Control over the radio tracking the capsule. Gravity 2013 The capsule lands in a lake, forcing Stone to shed her spacesuit underwater in order to swim to shore. Gravity 2013 She takes her first shaky steps on land, in the full gravity of Earth.

*Point to note: Whether or not Kowalski is alive and Stone made it home would be entirely up to the viewer's judgment(s).
